Cambridge vs Pearson EdExcel in Pakistan — Which Board is Better?

Detailed comparison of Cambridge (CAIE) and Pearson EdExcel exam boards for Pakistani students. Difficulty, recognition, and which one to choose.

One of the biggest decisions Pakistani families face is choosing between Cambridge (CAIE) and Pearson EdExcel for O Levels and A Levels. Let's break it down honestly.

Cambridge (CAIE) — The Traditional Choice

Cambridge International has been the dominant exam board in Pakistan for decades. Most elite schools like Karachi Grammar, Aitchison, and LGS follow Cambridge.

Pros:

  • Most recognised board in Pakistan
  • Wider subject range
  • Strong brand recognition with Pakistani universities
  • More past paper resources available
  • Larger community of students and teachers

  • Cons:

  • Generally considered harder, especially in sciences
  • Strict marking — partial marks can be harder to get
  • May/June and Oct/Nov sessions only

  • Pearson EdExcel — The Growing Alternative

EdExcel has been gaining popularity in Pakistani schools, especially in Karachi and Islamabad.

    Pros:

  • Modular structure (can retake individual papers)
  • Some students find the papers slightly more predictable
  • January and June sessions (more flexibility)
  • Strong recognition internationally

  • Cons:

  • Less common in Pakistan — fewer tutors specialise in it
  • Some Pakistani universities still prefer Cambridge
  • Fewer local resources and study groups

  • Which Should You Choose?

  • If your school already follows one board — stick with it. The teaching quality matters more than the board.
  • If you're aiming for Pakistani universities (LUMS, IBA, NUST) — Cambridge is slightly preferred but both are accepted.
  • If you're aiming for UK universities — both are equally recognised.
  • If you struggled with one board at O Level — consider switching for A Levels.

  • The truth is: both boards test the same fundamental knowledge. A student who studies well will score high on either board. Don't overthink the choice — focus on understanding the content.

At SeekhoAsaan, we cover both Cambridge and EdExcel to help every Pakistani student succeed, regardless of which board they're on.
