Best O Level Subject Combinations for Engineering in Pakistan

Which O Level subjects should you take if you want to study engineering at NUST, GIKI, or NED? Complete subject selection guide.

If you're dreaming of studying engineering at NUST, GIKI, NED, or UET, your O Level subject choices matter. Here's what you need to know.

Compulsory Subjects for Engineering Path:

  • Mathematics (4024): Non-negotiable. You need a strong A or A* here. Engineering is built on maths.
  • Physics (5054): The foundation of all engineering branches. Understanding forces, electricity, and energy is essential.
  • Chemistry (5070): Required for chemical, materials, and environmental engineering. Also helps with A Level Chemistry.
  • English Language (1123): Required by all universities and for communication skills.

  • Highly Recommended:

  • Additional Mathematics (4037): This gives you a massive head start for A Level Maths. Covers calculus, trigonometry, and algebra at a deeper level.
  • Computer Science (2210): Essential for CS/IT engineering. Even for other branches, programming skills are increasingly valuable.

  • Also Take:

  • Islamiyat (2058) or Pakistan Studies (2059): Compulsory for Pakistani students.
  • Urdu (3247): Some universities require it.

  • The Ideal Engineering Combo (8-9 subjects):

English, Urdu, Islamiyat/Pak Studies, Maths, Add Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and optionally Biology.

    Grade Requirements:

  • NUST: Minimum 60% aggregate in relevant subjects
  • GIKI: Minimum 70% in Maths and Physics
  • NED: Minimum 60% aggregate
  • UET: FSc or equivalent with 60%+

  • But aim for A*s and As — the higher your grades, the better your chances in the entry test.

Pro Tip: Start preparing for the entry test (NET/ECAT) alongside your A Levels. Many students focus only on A Levels and then scramble for the entry test. SeekhoAsaan's interactive notes help build the conceptual foundation you'll need for both!
